Tribute to the Maestro Piero Tosi
The art of stage costumes from the Tirelli bequest
The Costume Gallery is dedicating a show to Piero Tosi to mark the year in which he has received the Academy Honorary Award. Tosi worked as a theatrical costume designer, but made his mark above all in the cinema alongside great directors among whom we should mention Luchino Visconti and others who have contributed to the making of Italian film history such as Vittorio De Sica, Mauro Bolognini, Liliana Cavani, Franco Zeffirelli and Pier Paolo Pasolini.
Tosi utilised theatrical costumier firms such as that of Umberto Tirelli, with which he continues to collaborate even now, many years after the death of the founder.
The stage costumes of Piero Tosi which are on display in the ballroom of the Costume Gallery represent the nucleus of an important donation made by Umberto Tirelli to the Costume Gallery in 1986, comprising historical garments and theatre and film costumes.
Among the most famous works by the master we can admire Medea (film: Medea, directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, starring Maria Callas), Elisabetta (film: Ludwig, directed by Luchino Visconti, starring Romy Schneider), and Giuliana Hermil (film: L’innocente, directed by Luchino Visconti, starring Laura Antonelli).
